MS 13
First mates were commonly responsible for keeping the ship's log but their names are usually unknown.  In this case, the manuscript includes evidence that one Stephen Gorham served as first mate aboard bark KATE WHEELER.  See notes on the first page, "Nov 17th S Gorham joined the ship as first officer" and on June 22, 1858, below a transcribed letter, a note stating '"true copy" by "Stephen Gorham, mate of Kate Wheeler"' in the same handwriting used throughout the log.
