Square Dancing 34
In this image Ruohomaa shoots from an elevated angle at close range to couples promenading during a square dance, almost placing the viewer into the scene. The sense of immediacy is heightened by the dramatic lighting, which picks up textures of skin and clothing, and the dancers' obliviousness to the photographer.
In this improvised dance hall Kosti finds his preferred subject matter: the folkways of ordinary people at work and, as here, at play.
