Chicken Barn and Adjacent Feed Silo
Color photograph of one of four chicken barns and its accompanying feed silo.
At one time Belfast was home to companies that processed, at its zenith, 13.7 million broilers per year. Belfast claimed the title of “Broiler Capitol of the World.” (Broilers are chickens raised for meat). Chicken barns dotted the landscape throughout Waldo County. Maine ranked 10th nationally in broiler processing. The Belfast processers were all closed by 1988.
