The Schooner HELEN E. TAFT Being Launched At Dunn & Elliott

The 1197 gross ton 4-masted schooner HELEN E. TAFT homeport Thomaston, Maine being launched at Dunn & Elliott, Thomaston, Maine in 1904.  On January 30, 1908, The TAFT, commanded by Capt. Fales, on her way from Baltimore to Galveston, was was rammed by the Swedish steamer UPPLANDS, on her way from Port Arthur, Texas to Rotterdam and Cardiff, and sunk sixteen miles southwest of Cape Lookout lightship, off the coast of North Carolina.  Captain Wales and the crew of nine men of the schooner were picked up by the Clyde line steamer COMANCHE and are now being brought to New York.
