View, from the tugboat OLYMPIA, of the stern of the SS SIDNEY M. HAUPTMAN out of San Francisco with several tugboats tied up nearby. The Waterman Steamship Corporation of Mobile, Alabama purchased the ship in 1940 and renamed her the SS RAPHAEL SEMMES. She was built in 1920 as the ARGUS. On the 28th June 1942 when on route from Bombay,Table Bay & Trinidad for New York carrying a cargo of 7,500 tons general including tobacco & manganese ore she was torpedoed by U-332 and sunk. 19 crew lost from a total of 27.
